Bathroom Remodel Planning Checklist

1. Define what is actually wrong

Write down the specific complaints: not enough storage, dark at the mirror, tub never used, grout always dirty, cramped shower entry. A clear problem list produces a better design than a mood board alone.

2. Set a budget range and a contingency

Decide on a comfortable range rather than a single number, and reserve part of it for conditions found after demolition. Our cost calculator is a useful starting point for that range.

3. Decide the scope and layout

Determine whether the layout stays or changes, whether the tub is kept, converted, or replaced, and whether accessibility features should be included now or prepared for later.

4. Finalize every selection before demolition

This is the single most important item on the list. Confirm availability, not just preference.

• Floor tile, wall tile, accent tile, and grout color
• Vanity size, style, and hardware
• Countertop material and edge profile
• Shower valve, showerhead, hand-shower, and trim finish
• Toilet model and height
• Glass type and hardware finish
• Mirror, lighting, exhaust fan, and paint color
• Accessories: towel bars, hooks, niche placement, bench

5. Plan household logistics

Confirm which bathroom will be used, clear the vanity and cabinets, remove wall decor, plan for pets and parking, and agree on daily start and finish times.

6. Questions worth asking any remodeler

Ask how waterproofing is installed and tested, how change orders are handled, who is onsite each day, how debris and dust are managed, and what the walkthrough and punch-list process looks like. Clear answers to those five questions tell you a great deal.
