Start with the layout, not the finishes

Most small bathrooms feel tight because of clearance conflicts: a door that swings into the vanity, a toilet crowded against a wall, or a shower entry that requires stepping sideways. Solving those, sometimes by changing a door swing or shifting a vanity a few inches, does more than any finish upgrade.

Trade the tub for a shower where it makes sense

If the home has another tub, converting the alcove to a walk-in shower with a clear glass panel usually transforms the room. The eye travels to the back wall instead of stopping at a curtain, and the usable standing area increases.

Storage that does not consume floor space

Drawer-based vanities hold far more usable storage than a single cabinet with a center door. Recessed medicine cabinets, a tall linen cabinet in dead corner space, and a shower niche keep the counter and floor clear.

Layered lighting removes the shadows that make small rooms feel cramped: task light at face height beside or above the mirror, plus even ambient coverage. Frameless or minimal-hardware glass keeps sightlines open. Large-format tile with fewer grout lines and a light-to-mid tone keeps the room from feeling boxed in, and running floor tile in the longer direction reinforces the depth of the space.
